What tax filing status options does Income Lab cover?
The software automatically classifies plans as using 'Single' or 'Married Filing Jointly' for tax purposes
Last published on: December 09, 2025
Any Income Lab plan with only one person in it will automatically be modeled as subject to ‘Single’ tax brackets, and any plan with two people in it (a joint plan) will be modeled as subject to ‘Married Filing Jointly’ tax brackets. If one person in a joint plan has a specified date of death before the end of the plan, then the modeled tax brackets will change to ‘Single’ in the year following the first death.
Tax brackets differ not in the rates at which taxes apply, but rather in the thresholds at which different rates apply. The following table shows Federal ordinary income tax rates for 202,6 along with the applicable Taxable Income thresholds.
| Rate | Single taxable income | Married Filing Jointly taxable income |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $0 – $11,925 | $0 – $23,850 |
| 12% | $11,926 – $48,475 | $23,851 – $96,950 |
| 22% | $48,476 – $103,350 | $96,951 – $206,700 |
| 24% | $103,351 – $197,300 | $206,701 – $394,600 |
| 32% | $197,301 – $250,525 | $394,601 – $501,050 |
| 35% | $250,526 – $626,350 | $501,051 – $751,600 |
| 37% | $626,351 and up | $751,601 and up |
Note that in many places in Income Lab taxes or tax brackets are shown in Total Income or AGI levels, not Taxable Income. For example, if in a joint plan you see the 12% bracket starting at $73,851 in total income, that means the plan must have $50,000 in non-taxable income or deductions ($73,851 - $23,851 = $50,000). Most taxes, including ordinary income tax, are applied based on Taxable Income, not based on Total Income, Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), or Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI). Deducted income, non-taxable Social Security benefits, return of basis in withdrawals from IRAs, retirement accounts, or taxable accounts, inheritance, withdrawals from Roth accounts, and more are part of Total Income but not part of Taxable Income.
Currently, Income Lab does not have options for Head of Household or Married Filing Single tax brackets.
